Better Chipping means better scores
Chipping - you love it or hate it. Here are three concepts that make it work for you
1. Establish the "rule" which is: land the ball 1/3 of the total distance of the chip and let it run 2/3 of the total distance of the chip; with the 1/3 beginning from where the green and the golf course meet. This core rule will make you a better chipper involving over 95 % of your chipping situations.
The rule can also be stated as minimum air time and maximum ground time - the "run out" of a chip is where and how we control the total distance. I have my students toss balls in a bowling manner to establish the likely club to use (i..e. this looks like a nine iron shot and run out)
2. Select the right club that fits the rule: If you land the ball at the 1/3 total distance and you have/get a "dead ball" at the hole, you have selected the right club. If not - you want to pick another club. When the 1/3 -2/3 rule is applied correctly; the ball will look like a putt the last 2/3 of the total distance and the ball will be out of energy at the hole.
3. Technique Specific: Nearly all elite players will chip with the same mannerisms - a couple of brisk practice swings - hands forward and the ball positioned behind your sternum - weight more on your left side rather than equal. The backswing and forward swing are a relatively equal distance. The forward swing will stop with the natural swing of the club and "hold the finish" until the ball stops.
These are Tour Player Rules and they will work for you.
